Independence opens shelters as temps drop. Here’s where warming centers are around KC
The temperature is dropping and warming shelters are back open in Independence, and throughout the Kansas City metro.
Independence announced on Wednesday that it will be using the Roger T. Sermon Community Center as a warming center starting Wednesday, Jan. 19 until Jan. 20 to help those looking for shelter as dangerously low temperatures roll in this week.
With winds reaching up to nearly 30 miles per hour, the temperature could feel as low as negative 20 degrees this evening and into Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
The warming center is located at 201 N Dodgion St. in Independence and will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 pm. People who are looking for overnight shelter should arrive at 7:00 p.m., as overnight accommodations will be handled on a case by case basis, according to a statement from the city of Independence.
If you must go outside, it’s important to add layers. Make sure to cover as much of your face as possible, including ears and cheeks.
