Power outages from storms continue to affect about 1,400 customers in Kansas City area

About 1,400 customers across the Kansas City metro continue to be without power as utility crews work around the clock to restore electricity to those affected by Wednesday’ windstorm.

Evergy was reporting that more than 8,100 of its customers remained without power in both Kansas and Missouri, including about 1,180 in the Kansas City area.

As of 6 a.m. Friday, Evergy’s outage map showed that just over 600 of its customers in Jackson County were without power. That compares to 290 customers in Clay County, 150 in Platte County, 128 in Johnson County and 14 in Wyandotte County.

Much of Wyandotte County, however, is served by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Public Utilities, which reported 206 of its customers were without power Friday morning.

Meanwhile, Independence Power & Light was reporting no outages.

Evergy expects power to be restored to nearly all of its customers affected by the windstorm by Friday evening, although some outages will extend into the weekend, the company said Thursday evening.

Crews have restored power to more than 90 percent of Evergy’s customers by Thursday evening. Its crews were joined by more than 250 utility workers from neighboring utilities to help restore power to customers in Kansas and Missouri.

The windstorm brought gusts up to 100 mph in some location in Evergy’s network, downing power lines, breaking poles and damaging its power grid. Power outages affected about 258,000 of its customers.

In the Kansas City area, wind gusts reached to nearly 80 mph, the National Weather Service in Kansas City reported.

Evergy encouraged people to check on those who may be without power and provide alternative shelter to those who are very young, elderly or have compromised health conditions, especially as cooler weather moves into the region.
