Watch: Downtown Kansas City airport damaged by winds up to 77 mph in Wednesday storm

As high winds swept across the Kansas City metro area Wednesday night, wind gusts at Kansas City’s Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport clocked in at 77 mph.

On Thursday morning, crew members with CentiMark, a commercial and industrial roofing company, walked around the airport, surveying the scene.

Large sections of Hanger Two’s roof stretched across the pavement as crew members began carrying it away.

The wind speeds recorded at the downtown airport were the highest measured gusts anywhere in the metro, according to the National Weather Service.

The thunderstorms, accompanied by powerful wind, caused widespread damage across several states, including Kansas, Missouri, Colorado and Iowa. In the Kansas City metro, power lines, utility poles and trees came down with the wind.

On Thursday morning, more than 73,000 customers woke up without power across Evergy’s network, including 21,630 in the seven-county Kansas City metro area.
