Kansas City sees lightning and rain Sunday as Chiefs take on Buffalo Bills
Kansas Citians experienced thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rain Sunday night as the Chiefs took on the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium, which delayed the game.
Ahead of the game, the National Weather Service said people heading outside should make sure they have a poncho or raincoat on hand. Forecasters also advised to not “scoff” at lightning.
“Protect yourself and follow the venue’s safety instructions if lightning is occurring,” the agency wrote on Twitter. “Stay safe tonight!”
Gary Lezak, chief meteorologist at KSHB-TV, wrote on Twitter about 4 p.m. that he had “big concerns for a lightning delay.” By 9:15 p.m., the game was delayed because of “inclement weather.”
The stadium loudspeakers advised fans to seek shelter.
Earlier in the day, forecasters said the storms were expected to reach Kansas City between 6 and 7 p.m., shortly before kickoff, and continue throughout most of the night. The “bulk of” the rainfall will move in at 10 p.m., according to the weather service.
“Looks like a soggy one!” the agency wrote.
