Dreary, chilly weather expected in Kansas City as rain showers stick around

It’s going to feel a bit like football weather in Kansas City on Thursday, according to FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.

“It is going to be dreary, cold, rainy at times,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star.

“Off-and-on rain will stick around all the way through the early evening and that means your morning commute, your lunch hour forecast, your afternoon drive home and perhaps even the Chiefs game may be a little less than idea,” Ritter said. “I’d definitely have the rain gear handy for the day today.”

The Chiefs kick off the NFL season against the Houston Texans at 7:20 p.m. in Arrowhead Stadium.

More rain is in the forecast for Friday too, but after that the Kansas City area will start to dry out, she said.

Highs on Thursday are expected to remain in the mid 50s. Friday will be a little warmer with highs climbing into the mid-60s, she said.

The weekend is much warmer, with highs climbing to near 80 degrees on Saturday and the mid-70s on Sunday. Highs are expected to be in the upper 70s and low 80s for the first half of next week, Ritter said.

The National Weather Service in Kansas City said a record for the coldest high in Kansas City for Sept. 9 was set Wednesday when the high reached only 54 degrees. That broke the old record of 66 degrees set in 1907.

And with Thursday’s high expected to be in the same range, Kansas City could set another record for the coldest high for this day. The current record is 60 degrees, which was set in 1898.

The average high for this time of year in Kansas City is 81 degrees with the average low of 60 degrees, according to the weather service.
