Flash flood warning issued for parts of Kansas City metro as rain also likely Thursday

After a day of “off and on rain,” said FOX4 meteorologist Joe Lauria, a flash flood warning has been issued for parts of Cass, Jackson and Johnson counties in Missouri, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service said the flash flood warning was issued for northern Cass County, southeastern Jackson County and southwestern Johnson County until 12:15 a.m. Thursday. The warning also includes Lee’s Summit, Raymore and Pleasant Hill.

According to the weather service, as of 9:18 p.m., 3 inches of rain had already fallen and radar showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain.

Small creeks, highways, streets and other low lying areas could be impacted, the weather service said.

Earlier on Wednesday, parts of southern Kansas City saw street flooding, according to the weather service, as up to 2.5 inches fell.

Lauria, who provides weather updates to The Star, said there were “some really tropical downpours” Wednesday.

“That may not change that much overnight,” Lauria said, “although we’ll probably start to see the activity kind of fade a little bit overnight to night before it starts to pick up again tomorrow.”

Lauria said that the result of the rain is “cooler than average temperatures.”

Highs on Thursday should near 80 degrees.

Lauria said scattered showers are possible overnight.

“Then tomorrow we’ll have some activity around in the morning with another kind of bubble up of activity during the afternoon,” Lauria said.

On Thursday, he said, storms will continue to be off and on again. And as the rain wraps up on Friday, Lauria said temperatures should be in the upper 70s.

“(The) weekend looks good but temperatures will remain below average through the early part of next week,” Lauria said.
