Student who attended Kearney High School graduation ceremony tests positive for COVID-19

A student who attended the Kearney High School graduation ceremony on Saturday has since tested positive for COVID-19, district officials say.

The student didn’t experience symptoms until Monday and then was tested, according to a news release from Kearney School District superintendent Matthew S. Miller.

The case is defined as a “school exposure” due to the student being in a school setting two days before showing symptoms.

As part of the graduation plan approved by the Clay County Public Health Center, there were two ceremonies, graduates could bring two guests and people were required to wear masks and be physically distanced, according to the release.

“We hope that by taking these precautions we will have prevented the spread of additional cases,” Miller said in the release.

Graduates waiting for the ceremony were put into two separate groups in locker rooms, according to the release. The student who tested positive was with 75 others in a softball locker room on the south side of the building, according to the news release.

The Clay County health department will contact anyone determined to be a close contact. Anyone experiencing symptoms should talk with their doctor.
