Rain, thunderstorms kick off the week in Kansas City, bringing break in the heat

A line of thunderstorms was sweeping across the Kansas City area Monday morning, producing heavy rains, frequent lightning and reduced visibility, kicking off what will be a wet start to the work week, said FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.

“Later on today, we are expecting low 80s, off-and-on rain chances and it’s going to be noticeably cooler today and soggy for that matter compared to where we were this weekend,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star.

The intermittent rain showers are expected to continue throughout the day, but start to wane during the evening, she said.

“Then it’s going to pick right up again overnight into tomorrow morning,” Ritter said. “We’re going to wake up tomorrow morning to some thunderstorms here in Kansas City which will keep our temps cooler again tomorrow as well.”

Highs are expected to be in the low to mid-80s Monday and Tuesday before climbing back to around 90 degrees for the remainder of the week.

“We will slowly slide back into a hot forecast heading into the weekend,” Ritter said.

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

Because of heavy rains moving through the northern part of the metro area, the National Weather Service in Kansas City issued a flash food warning for northern Clay County, southwestern Clinton county and northeastern Platte County.

Radar indicated that thunderstorms were producing heavy rains, with as much as three inches of rain already on the ground around 7:30 a.m. An additional one to two inches of rain was possible.

Some of the cities under the warning include Excelsior Springs, Smithville, Kearney, Lawson, Plattsburg, Camden Point, Holt and Mosby.
