‘Brace yourself’: Kansas City can expect heat index to soar to triple digits Tuesday
It’ll be another hot and muggy day Tuesday as the heat index is expected to reach dangerous levels, said FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.
“If you thought it was warm yesterday, brace yourself,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star. “It’s going to be really hot today.”
Afternoon temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-90s, she said.
“It’s not just 95 we’re going to have to worry about — it’s the heat index,” Ritter said. “That is why we have a heat advisory. It starts at noon today and lasts until 8 o’clock tonight.”
The heat index is expected to climb above 100 degrees, she said. Overnight lows will not provide much of a break as they are expected to remain in the 70s.
“We’ll get a little break tomorrow because of some rain and storms, but on Thursday and Friday we’re right back into the heat with more triple digit numbers on the map,” Ritter said. “It’s going to feel very hot and very humid.”
Although there is rain falling west of the Kansas City Tuesday morning, most of the metro will remain dry. There’s a chance for rain and thunderstorms Wednesday morning.
The dangerous heat is expected to continue into the weekend with highs climbing to near 100 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.
The National Weather Service in Kansas City in its forecast advised that the hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. It is encouraging people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms and to stay out of the sun.
Those working outside should reschedule strenuous tasks to early morning or evening, according to the weather service.
