Rain in the forecast heading into Memorial Day weekend in the Kansas City area
The forecast for Memorial Day weekend looks to be a wet one for the Kansas City area as the metro faces several days with chances of rain and thunderstorms, according to FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.
“We have rain chances Friday, Sunday and Monday that are pretty widespread and going to be an issue more so than others especially compared to Saturday,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star. “Bottom line: it gets warmer and more humid all the way through early next week.”
Those headed to the Lake of the Ozarks face a steamy forecast with temperatures in the 80s. The better chances for rain will come on Sunday and Monday.
Before the holidays, however, Kansas City faces yet another gray day as cloudy skies are expected Thursday, she said.
“We’re going to be a smidge warmer, topping out near 73 degrees,” Ritter said. “Looking ahead to the end of the day, there may be some peeks sunshine, similar to the last couple of days.”
Storms are expected to begin developing Thursday evening west of the Kansas City.
“Our rain chances will start to go up heading into tomorrow and the up coming weekend,” she said.
BEHIND THE STORY
MOREHow we did this story
The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.
The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said scattered thunderstorms are possible Thursday into Friday morning, especially across eastern Kansas into western Missouri during the early morning hours.
A second round of thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon. A few of the thunderstorms could be strong to severe, with damaging hail and winds possible. The risk for tornadoes are low at this time, the weather service said.
