Storms to bring rain to Kansas City metro later in week, snow to northern Missouri

The Kansas City area will see warmer weather Tuesday as temperatures climb from overnight lows that were below freezing to highs around 50 by the afternoon, said FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.

“Later on today, we’re going to have a little bit of extra cloud cover, but warmer temperatures as our afternoon highs climb up into the mid- and upper 40s to low 50s,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star. “We’ll call it with 50 degrees right here in the metro.”

But storms could make a return to the area.

“As we look ahead to the next several days, we are going to be talking about the potential for a little bit of rain, especially as we head through Thursday and then Thursday evening,” Ritter said. “Thursday evening into Friday morning, just to our north, there’s some very strong indications that northern Missouri may once again have a little run at some winter weather.”

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

Temperatures on Wednesday will be a little warmer, with highs climbing to the upper 50s. But then they will bottom out with highs reaching only the upper 40s. Overnight lows will be in the 30s.

Temperatures will rebound with highs climbing into the 60s for the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said that the snow is expected to be light, with a dusting to a half inch possible Wednesday morning and then less than 1.5 inches of snow possible north of Interstate 70 by Friday morning.

In its forecast guidance for temporary structures, including tents used for medical purposes, the weather service advised that winds will be out of the west with gusts of 25 to 30 mph in northern Missouri Tuesday. In the Kansas City metro area, winds will be from the south to south-southwest with gusts 20 to 25 mph.
