Heavy rain, minor flooding possible as storm moves through Kansas City area

The high temperature could reach 60 degrees Sunday afternoon in Kansas City, and storms are expected to move into the area overnight bringing rain, according to FOX4 meteorologists.

“We start off with some cloud cover to the south, but it’s actually very mild and pleasant,” said FOX4 meteorologist Garry Frank, who provides weather updates to The Star. “We are going to stay that way through the majority of Sunday. I think even by the mid-day hours, it’s pretty warm.”

Rain will start moving into the area from the south Sunday evening and creep northward overnight.

“We are going to be dealing with some pretty steady rain into the overnight hours,” Frank said. “I think the start of Monday we will at least transition to some cooler temperatures. You’ll notice some 30s creeping in. We may see a few flakes mix in as well.”

Some areas could see more than 1 inch of rain possible by the time the rain stops.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said moderate to locally heavy rainfall is possible at times. The heaviest rain will fall over areas to the south of Kansas City. Minor localized flooding is possible as well as river flooding in east-central Kansas and west-central Missouri.

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

Closer look at forecast

The first round of rain will begin moving into the Kansas City area after sunset Sunday and first reach those living along and south of Interstate 70, said FOX4 meteorologist Alex Countee.

“We will be dealing with the rain showers through out much of the overnight tonight,” Countee said. “By about 6:30 a.m. tomorrow morning, we will still have the light rain around Kansas City with a little bit more back towards Warrensburg and Sedalia, south and east of town.”

The high on Monday is expected to be around 38 degrees. However, temperatures are expected to cool down Monday afternoon, so snow showers could mix in with any remaining rain. The rain is expected to slack off a bit by the evening commute Monday, he said.

A second round of rain is expected Tuesday that could mix with snow showers as temperatures are expected to climb only to the upper 30s.

“The second half of the work week looks much better than the first half,” Countee said. “We will start to rebound as far as those high temperatures go after Wednesday, through the upper 30s into the 40s and close to 50 as we head toward the new weekend.”
