Dangerous cold lingers in Kansas City, with temperatures to fall near zero Friday

Dangerously cold temperatures will linger in the Kansas City area overnight Thursday, plunging to around 1 degree Friday morning, according to FOX4 meteorologist Michelle Bogowith.

“We are going to see highs only in the teens today,” said Bogowith, who provides weather updates to The Star. “At least we have sunshine.”

When you factor in northerly winds, the wind chill values this afternoon will make it feel like temperatures are still in the single digits, she said.

“Speaking of single digits, we will bottom out pretty close to zero degrees waking up Friday morning,” Bogowith said. “We will do a little better though into the afternoon (Friday) as we continue to carry over that sunshine. High temperatures will be in the upper 20s to near 30 degrees.”

Temperatures fell to 3 degrees at Kansas City International Airport Thursday morning. Wind chills made it feel more like -17 degrees.

On what was Kansas City’s coldest day of the winter season so far, nearly 6,000 Evergy Inc. customers were without power Thursday morning in Overland Park and Olathe. Power restored to all but 27 customers by noon Thursday, according to the company’s power outage map.

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

A warm up is expected this weekend as highs were expected to climb to the 40s on Saturday and 50s on Sunday and Monday, Bogowith said. Those temperatures are more typical of what Kansas City sees in early to mid-March.

Kansas City’s next winter weather system is expected to sweep through the metro area on Tuesday.

“That’s going to drop us like a rock,” Bogowith said. “We’re down into the 20s as the roller coaster ride continues.”
