Several thousand customers without power on Kansas City’s coldest day of the season

Nearly 6,000 Evergy Inc. customers were without power in Overland Park and Olathe on Kansas City’s coldest day of the winter season, according to the power outage map on the company’s website.

The utility was reporting that it had 5,892 customers affected by power outages. The majority were in Overland Park, where 5,160 customers didn’t have power. There were 596 customers in Olathe who didn’t have power.

The outages, which were first reported about 6 a.m., occurred south of West 135th Street in southern Johnson County, according to the company’s map. The company estimated that repairs would be made by late morning or early afternoon. The cause of the outages was listed as unknown.

The outages come as an Arctic blast sent temperatures to dangerous levels, forcing dozen of schools to cancel classes Thursday.

The Kansas City area saw temperatures plunge to near zero degrees Thursday morning. Wind chills fell to -17 degrees at Kansas City International Airport.
