Snow likely as fans head downtown for Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory parade

Fans headed to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade and rally in downtown Kansas City Wednesday will want to prepare for the likelihood of snow falling, according to FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.

“The main event, if you will, arrives tomorrow (Wednesday) now as this first little wave that passes us by won’t be nearly as widespread as we are expecting tomorrow,” Ritter said. “We are going to keep a close eye on the heaviest bands because they may be a little bit closer to the metro.”

Between 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected from a winter storm that arrives in the Kansas City area Tuesday morning, said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star. Some areas could see even more snow depending how the heavier bands of snow move across the area.

In addition to the snow, fans will have to deal with temperatures in the 20s and wind chills in the mid-teens.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill has issued a winter weather advisory for Tuesday and Wednesday saying the chance for periods of freezing drizzle and light snow will through Tuesday afternoon and evening.

A closer look at the forecast

“Today will be another cold day with our chances for a wintry mix and snow returning very late this morning into the lunch hour and we will continue to see coverage for this evening as well,” Ritter said.

Rain, wintry mix and snow is expected to fall mainly south of Interstate 70 for the first part of the day Tuesday. The precipitation is expected to become more widespread after lunch and into the evening hours, she said.

“We are also going to see the potential for more snow as we head into tonight,” Ritter said.

At 7 a.m. Wednesday, there will likely be snow falling in the metro area, or “some very heavy snow knocking on our doorstep,” Ritter said.

“That will move in during the middle of the morning during the parade or when you’re trying to get to the parade,” Ritter said. “And then we will see that snow continuing during the afternoon as you’re trying to get home from the parade.”

By Thursday morning, the snow will move out of the area.

“We are going to keep a close eye on the heaviest bands because they may be a little bit closure to the metro,” Ritter said.
