Snow, freezing rain possible as stark reality of winter returns to Kansas City
After a day where the high flirted with record levels, Kansas City will be quickly reminded that it’s still the winter season, said FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.
“As we go through the day today, we are going to be watching a cold front work its way through the region,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star.
Areas to the north will see colder temperatures, while areas to the south will be warmer.
“Some of you will get into the 50s,” she said. “Some of you won’t even see that — you’ll be stuck in the 30s throughout the day.”
In the immediate Kansas City area, highs are expected to reach near 60 degrees, she said.
That’s slightly lower than Sunday, which saw a high of 65, making it the fourth warmest Groundhog Day on record. The record was 69 degrees, set in both 1924 and 1992, according to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill. The normal high for this time of year in Kansas City is 40 degrees.
BEHIND THE STORY
MOREHow we did this story
The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.
“We might not even get to 30 degrees tomorrow or Wednesday as our stark reality that we have winter still in the forecast is right around the corner,” Ritter said.
Between 1 to 3 inches of snow will be possible from the winter storm as it moves through the metro on Tuesday and Wednesday, she said.
That could make for chilly conditions for fans celebrating the Kansas City Chief’s Super Bowl victory with a parade that’s scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The parade route will be announced on Tuesday. A victory rally will be held at Union Station about 1:30 p.m.
The National Weather Service said a wintry mix of freezing rain or drizzle and light snow is in the forecast for Tuesday into Tuesday evening. A light glaze to .05 of an inch of ice is also possible.
Another round of light snow is possible during on Wednesday, the day of the parade, the weather service said.
“For the parade Wednesday the weather won’t be Super, bundle up,” the weather service said in a tweet.
