Sunday to be super as Kansas City flirts with record high; winter storm, snow coming
As fans hope for a record breaking performance by the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday’s Super Bowl, weather in the metro is posed to do just that.
“Later on today, we are going to be flirting with record highs here in Kansas City,” said FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star.
Temperatures will be topping out in the upper 50s in the afternoon with mostly sunny skies throughout the day, she said.
The record high for this day in Kansas City is 59 degrees, set in 1990 and 1924. The normal high for this time of year is 40 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill.
BEHIND THE STORY
MOREHow we did this story
The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.
“That’s the good news,” Ritter said. “The bad news is our reality check — that is we are in the month of February — arrives a little bit later in the week.”
The week will start off warm with highs in the 60s by Monday afternoon.
“Then a cold front crashes in Monday night into Tuesday setting us up for another round of winter weather,” Ritter said. “This will include a wintry mix and snow for some of you on Tuesday. As we head through the evening on Tuesday, snow still maybe falling — this is going to be measurable snowfall guys.”
Another lapse of snow could roll through the metro again on Wednesday as the winter storm system slides by, she said.
“It’s going to get a lot colder after the next couple of days with highs only in the upper 20s to lower 30s and then we will slowly try to recover heading into next weekend,” Ritter said.
