Three-day winter storm system headed to Kansas City with snow, freezing rain, sleet
Tuesday’s weather will be mostly hassle free, but that can’t be said about the rest of the week, according to FOX4 meteorologist Michelle Bogowith.
“For the day today, there are no issues whatsoever,” said Bogowith, who provides weather updates to The Star. “We’ll enjoy some sunshine and warmer temperatures climbing into the lower 30s.”
The day will start very cold, with temperatures in the single digits and wind chill values below zero, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City. Temperatures, however, will quickly warm.
The cold air that remains will set the stage for Kansas City’s next winter weather event that moves in overnight Tuesday.
“There are going to be issues Wednesday, Thursday and into Friday as we track this three-day-long storm system that is organizing out to our west,” Bogowith said.
Clouds will start building into the Kansas City area for the second half of the day Tuesday and overnight.
“Waking up tomorrow morning, it is possible we will have snow falling, especially on the Kansas side at first,” Bogowith said.
The snow will eventually cross into Missouri as the storm system moves east.
“It is likely we will start to see a wintry mix developing for the second half of your Wednesday and kind of go back and forth between the two — whether it be snow or more of a wintry mix with some cold rain showers involved in that, some freezing rain, some sleet,” Bogowith said.
“This just continues throughout the day on Thursday — more of the snow chances more of the wintry mix chances.”
BEHIND THE STORY
MOREHow we did this story
The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.
By Friday morning, the precipitation will turn into mostly a snow event, as cold air wraps around the backside of the storm.
Highs through the remainder of the week will hover in the lower to mid-30s, with overnight lows in the mid- to upper 20s. The weekend will be chilly with highs reaching around 30 degrees on Saturday and mid-30s on Sunday.
The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said that areas north of the Missouri River will likely see the higher snow totals.
Between 1 to 2 inches of is expected south of the Missouri River and 2 to 5 inches north of the river. However, any slight change in the temperature could have an impact on how much snow Kansas City gets, according to the weather service.
Cooler temperatures would mean more snow, while warmer temperatures would mean less snow.
