Chiefs fans: ‘Be prepared for a cold, cold Sunday’ in the KC area, meteorologist says

The wintry precipitation is behind us, but colder temperatures are ahead this weekend in the Kansas City area, according to FOX4 meteorologist Joe Lauria.

The storm system that left an icy mess on Kansas City area highways and streets early Friday has moved into the Upper Midwest.

“But attached to the storm is a cold front,” Lauria says in a weather update to The Star.

The cold front will move into Kansas City in the early-morning hours of Saturday, causing temperatures to plummet. Temperatures are expected to go from being in the 30s to down near the low 20s Saturday morning.

By the afternoon hours, temperatures should be back to the low 30s again. The wind will pick up to 30 to 35 mph.

Sunday’s forecast calls for temperatures around 22 degrees by the 2:05 p.m. kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium as the Chiefs face the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship game. Temperatures may drop to 18 degrees by the second half.

“We’ll have more sunshine, that’s a good thing, but the wind chill factors will be down into the single digits,” Lauria said. “Be prepared for a cold, cold Sunday — a little breeze out there, too, especially in the morning.”

Lauria also brought up the possibility of another storm that could “create more wintry weather” in this part of the country toward the middle or the end of next week.

In the meantime, the meteorologist added that those who may be out late Friday night should be aware of outlying areas as well as sidewalks and parking lots that may still be slippery from Friday’s ice storm. The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill is also warning of ice on untreated roads as temperatures drop below freezing again Saturday morning.
