Winter storm in KC: Freezing rain will continue overnight, then snow on Saturday

Freezing rain will continue and temperatures will plummet overnight as a winter storm approaches, bringing snow and ice to the Kansas City area, according to FOX4 meteorologist Joe Lauria.

A winter storm warning that was issued by the National Weather Service for parts of Missouri and Kansas, including the entire Kansas City metro area, is in effect now until 6 p.m. Saturday.

In a weather update to The Star, Lauria said colder air will settle into the region, and a glaze of ice will likely form overnight on wet surfaces, which may cause roads to be slick. Travelers can check traffic and the conditions of highways and interstates using online maps provided by Kansas City Scout, the Missouri Department of Transportation or the Kansas Department of Transportation.

On Saturday, around 7 a.m. or 8 a.m., sleet will transition over to snow, which could drift around in the wind and be heavy at times. Temperatures will be in the low 20s.

As of Friday night, Lauria was predicting that Kansas City and the surrounding area could see 2 to 6 inches of snow. Northern Missouri may get 2 to 3 inches, and areas south and east of Kansas City may see smaller amounts, Lauria said.

“I think we’re going to easily see an inch, and I think we’ll probably see 2, 3, 4, 5 inches of snow,” Lauria said. “I think the chances are much less that we see over 6 inches of snow.”

For the Kansas City Chiefs game for Sunday, skies should be partly sunny and temperatures are expected to be in the low 30s by the kickoff at 2:05 p.m. During the second half of the game, Lauria said there could be some snow showers.

Temperatures will start to warm up early next week.
