Freezing rain, snow possible as Kansas City’s next winter storm rolls through metro

A winter storm is expected to roll across the Kansas City area at the end of this week, bringing colder air and the likelihood of freezing rain and snow, according to FOX4 meteorologist Michelle Bogowith.

“The next couple of days will feature our next weather system building into Kansas City,” said Bogowith, who provides weather updates to The Star.

But before the bad weather strikes, Kansas City will have a pleasant day Wednesday with plenty of sunshine and highs in the lower 50s.

“Now for Thursday, we are going to see temperatures getting even warmer, maxing out in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees,” she said. “However, rain chances will start to build in after the lunch hour into the evening and overnight in particular. There may be few rumbles of thunder.”

Friday, temperatures will begin to drop. A very cold rain will fall.

“As we get into the evening hours, the colder air moves in,” Bogowith said. “We are going to start seeing some issues developing on roadways as freezing rain and a wintry mix will begin to develop as the freezing line gets closer and closer to Kansas City.”

The wintry mix is expected to transition to snow overnight into Saturday as the colder air spills into the metro. Areas to the south and east of downtown Kansas City will see the greater impact from the snow.

“The track (of the storm) is still uncertain and this is something that needs to be watched,” Bogowith said.

The storm is expected to move out of the area by Sunday, but it will leave behind much colder temperatures, especially if there’s fresh snowpack on the ground, she said.

Those headed to Arrowhead Stadium for the NFL playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans can expected temperatures to be in the 20s for tailgating and the mid-30s for the afternoon kickoff. Temperatures are expect to fall into the lower 30s during the second half of the game, Bogowith said.
