Winter storm headed for Kansas City with chance of rain, freezing rain and snow
Don’t let the next two days lull you into a false sense of security, Kansas City — an approaching winter storm is threatening to bring rain, freezing rain and snow, according to FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.
“Later on today it is actually going to be fairly nice once again,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star. “Low 50s are expected, we will have increasing clouds as the day unfolds and we will stay pretty quiet weather-wise in advance of a very busy next three days.”
Rain is more likely Thursday, she said. Rain transitioning to a wintry mix and eventually snow is expected Friday. And there a chance for decent snow for parts of the Kansas City area Saturday.
“Keep in mind the track (of the storm) is still a little bit up in the air as far as Friday into Saturday is concerned, but we are banking on rain and a few thunderstorms tomorrow,” she said.
“On Friday, we will wake up in the morning dry, but then we will see rain overspread the metro during the afternoon.”
During the evening, rain will transition over to a wintry mix of rain and snow, possibly freezing rain and sleet, creating ice until around midnight, she said. The wintry mix will switch over to all snow early Saturday.
BEHIND THE STORY
MOREHow we did this story
The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.
“There is another surge of snow just east of Kansas City” on Saturday, Ritter said. “This shoved a little bit further to the west in the last 24 hours, so we are not in the clear just yet for additional decent snow amounts on Saturday.”
The temperatures will be colder but drier in time for the NFL playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs’ and the Houston Texans Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said on Twitter that the wintry weather is becoming more likely this weekend, with a setup for rain turning into freezing rain and then into snow Friday evening into Sunday.
