After warm start to New Year, two storm systems to combine and bring rain, snow to KC

With sunny skies and temperatures expected to climb into the 50s, Kansas City’s New Year got off to a great start Wednesday.

But two storm systems that are expected to combine were threatening to bring rain and a wintry mix to the area later this week, according to FOX4 meteorologist Michelle Bogowith, who provides weather updates to The Star. Some areas could see snow.

Temperatures are expected to cool a bit from highs in the mid-50s on Wednesday to the upper 40s on Thursday, she said. Clouds and the chance of rain are also expected to move into the area.

“As this system wraps around on the backside colder air spills in for Friday,” Bogowith said. “Temperatures are going to be dropping and we will have that chance to see the cold rain transition to a little more of a wintry mix — some light snow to finish for some of you.”

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

The soggiest locations from Thursday’s rain will be south and east of the metro area, she said. But headed into early Friday morning, the rain is expected to change over to a wintry mix or possibly snow in Kansas City.

As that storm system clears out, Kansas City will be left with drier conditions headed into the weekend. Highs on Saturday will remain in the upper 30s and warming to near 50 on Sunday, she said.
