Plenty of sunshine and highs in the 50s start Kansas City’s New Year

The New Year is getting off to a bright start weather-wise in Kansas City, but rain and possibly snow looms in the coming days.

“We are expecting ample sunshine and a quite nice forecast to start the New Year — 55 degrees and some of you on the south side may end up in the mid- to upper 50s,” said FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star. “We are anticipating dry conditions today and quiet weather.”

But the nice weather will be short lived as rain chances return for those south and east of the Kansas City metro area.

“We might have some nuisance weather in spots in that location,” Ritter said. “Areas north and west of Kansas City should have a nice day tomorrow as well.”

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

The next storm system swings through the Kansas City metro on Friday, bringing the chance for scattered snow showers. The snow, however, shouldn’t have any major impact, Ritter said.

“By Saturday, the weather looks a whole lot nicer,” she said.

Cooler temperatures, however, will prevail Thursday and into the weekend, before warming Sunday into Monday.
