Black ice a danger in Kansas City before warmer temps arrive ahead of Christmas week

Drivers and pedestrians will need to watch for slick conditions during their morning commute Wednesday in Kansas City as temperatures remain below freezing across the metro, according to FOX4 meteorologist Michelle Bogowith.

“Black ice is a big concern on untreated surfaces, so be prepared for that this morning,” said Bogowith, who provides weather updates to The Star.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said extra care will be needed on sidewalks and parking lots that have not been treated and could be slick.

A dense fog advisory was in place again Wednesday morning, but the fog isn’t as widespread as it was on Tuesday. The advisory is for counties south and southeast of the Kansas City area, where visibility was reduced to less than a mile. With temperatures hovering close to and below freezing, the fog could become freezing fog, Bogowith said.

High temperatures on Wednesday will climb above freezing, but not by much. And then the warm-up begins, with highs jumping 10 degrees to the lower to middle 40s Thursday and Friday, she said.

The average high for this time of year is around 40 degrees, according to the weather service.

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

The high on Saturday, which is the first day of winter, will climb to near 50s. The warm weather continues into Christmas week, with highs reaching above 50 on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

The National Weather Service said the high on Christmas Day is expected to be in the lower 50s, meaning no White Christmas this year for Kansas City.
