Pedestrian struck, killed on NB I-435 in Kansas City; highway closed at rush hour

A pedestrian was struck and killed on northbound I-435 on Kansas City’s East Side, closing the highway at the start of the Wednesday morning rush hour, a police spokesman said.

The crash happened about 5:15 a.m. near Sni-A-Bar Road, near the stadiums at the Truman Sports Complex, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino of the Kansas City Police Department.

The highway was likely to be closed for a while as officers investigated the fatal crash, DiMartino said.

The closure backed up traffic past Blue Parkway/Missouri 350. Police forced drivers to exit at Eastwood Trafficway.

Southbound traffic on I-435 also was slowed to a crawl, with backups of bumper-to-bumper traffic stretching beyond Interstate 70 to around U.S. 40.
