After mass shooting injures 9, Kansas City mayor blames unlicensed after-hours club
Mayor Quinton Lucas blamed the promoters and owners of an unlicensed after-hours club for a mass shooting that injured nine people early Saturday in Kansas City.
“Another mass shooting at an after-hours, unlicensed club. 4am Saturday. 9 people hit,” Lucas wrote on social media. “To irresponsible owners and promoters, I know the dollars seem worth it, but are the lives changed and too often lost and the lawsuits of some value to you too?”
Officers responded to the shooting in the 7900 block of Troost Avenue around 4 a.m. Saturday, after a flurry of gunfire was sprayed into a crowd in the 7900 block of Troost Avenue, Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department, said.
As officers arrived, they found a large crowd that was leaving the area and three women who had been shot. All three had non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment, Gonzalez said.
Six other shooting victims, all adults, also showed up at hospitals after being driven there in private vehicles. All also had non-life-threatening injuries, Gonzalez said.
An Instagram post on Thursday touted an after-hours event at 7926 Troost Avenue: “Big Mama’s Playhouse presents: First Friday After Hours.”
After The Athletic and other publications ran stories saying the shooting was near England’s World Cup base in Kansas City, Lucas responded on X.
“The shooting at an after-hours club is a tragedy,” Lucas said. “It is also nowhere near England’s or any country’s training or lodging facilities.”
England is staying at The Inn at Meadowbrook in Prairie Village and training at the Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, both of which are just over 5 miles away from the site of the mass shooting.
“We are grateful there was no loss of life,” Lucas said. “We will hold the offenders and all in violation of the law accountable.”
