All I-70 lanes reopen after 13 cattle escape in multi-vehicle crash at Oak Grove

All lanes on Interstate 70 have reopened after two semi-trailers, including one hauling cattle, crashed near Oak Grove, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The crash occurred about 10:10 a.m. and involved three vehicles, said Cpl. Justin Ewing, a spokesman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The drivers of the trucks were not injured.

According to a post on X from the Missouri Highway Patrol, 13 cattle escaped and some of them were injured in the crash. Local resources were still being used to capture the loose cattle as of 2 p.m. Anyone who spotted them was being asked to call 911.

All lanes had reopened by 3 p.m. Wednesday, after being shut down for nearly 5 hours.

About 10 minutes after the crash, both the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Kansas City District sent alerts on X that westbound I-70 was closed at Mile Marker 28, just east of the Oak Grove crash.

“Please avoid the area, and take an alternative route of travel,” the highway patrol said in its post.

At about 10:25 a.m., the MoDOT’s Kansas City District posted an update saying that the eastbound lanes of I-70 were also closed.

During the shutdown, Kansas City Scout traffic showed that eastbound I-70 traffic was slowing to a crawl just before the exit to Northeast Adams Dairy Parkway, and being forced to exit at Grain Valley.
