Drivers who usually use Interstate 435 to cut across Johnson County over the weekend may want to explore another route to save themselves from some travel time and headaches.

A stretch of eastbound and westbound Interstate 435 will be fully closed beginning at 7 p.m. Friday and continuing throughout the weekend. All lanes of the highway are expected to be reopened by 6 a.m. Monday.

I-435 will be closed between Quivira and Antioch Roads, Delaney Tholen, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Transportation, said in a news release.

All ramps for westbound I-435 to southbound U.S. 69, eastbound I-435 to northbound U.S. 69 and northbound U.S. 69 to westbound I-435 will be closed.

The closure is necessary to demolish a bridge as a part of the KDOT U.S. 69 Expansion Project known as 69 Express.

During the closure, eastbound I-435 traffic will exit and take U.S. 69 south to College Boulevard. Drivers will then loop around and head back north on U.S. 69 and exit onto eastbound I-435.

Westbound I-435 traffic will exit onto U.S. 69 north to 103rd Street. Drivers will then loop around and head back south on U.S. 69 and exit onto westbound I-435.

The bridge demolition is part of the $572 million U.S. 69 project, which includes reconstructing the highway between 103rd and 151st Streets. The highway is being expanded to add an express toll lane in each direction, while the other lanes remain free.
