Here’s your excuse if you’re looking to put off those weekend chores: The National Weather Service is urging people to avoid strenuous activity outdoors, drink plenty of fluids, and seek air conditioning this weekend.

“Temperatures will become quite hot Saturday through early next week, with highs well into the 90s and heat indices exceeding 100 degrees each afternoon Saturday through Monday,” the weather service said in a tweet on X, formerly Twitter.

But before the heat arrives, Kansas City will see another pleasant day on Friday. In the afternoon, temperatures will reach around 87 degrees, which is typically the temperature in Kansas City this time of year.

For those with evening plans, it should be enjoyable. Temperatures will start in the mid-80s and fall into the 70s, and winds will be light out of the southwest.

Temperatures have been cooler than normal this August. The average maximum temperature for this month is 83.6, more than four degrees cooler than the normal average of 87.9 degrees. So far, this August has been the 20th coolest in Kansas City’s history, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Regional Climate Centers.

It should be dry through midnight. The weather service said showers and thunderstorms could move into the area early Saturday, perhaps not until daybreak. There’s a 30 to 50% chance of thunderstorms, but no severe weather is expected.

There is a chance for some heavy rainfall.

August heat returns to Kansas City

The weather service said storms are expected to move out of the Kansas City area before 11 a.m. Saturday, leading to mostly sunny skies.

Temperatures will begin to heat up, climbing to over 90 degrees Saturday afternoon. The heat index is expected to be between 95 and 105 degrees. Overnight, temperatures will remain warm, falling to around 80 degrees.

The weather will become increasingly hot and humid, with temperatures soaring into the upper 90s and heat index values possibly rising to 110 degrees on Sunday.

A heat advisory is also likely for the Kansas City area, the weather service said.

Hot and humid conditions are expected to spill over into the beginning of next week, with temperatures near 98 degrees on Monday and 95 degrees on Tuesday.

Chance of stormy weather in mid-week forecast

Temperatures will gradually drop after the hot start to next week. By Wednesday, they should be back to or near normal for this time of year.

There is a chance for storms from Wednesday through Friday next week as cooler weather moves in.

“The current forecast depicts gradually increasing chances of storms Wednesday through Friday, with high temperatures slowly lowering through the 80s during this period,” the weather service said.
