Searchers looking for a missing 6-year-old boy found the child dead in a small pound in Waverly, Missouri, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The sheriff’s office received a report about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday of the missing boy in Waverly, about 1 hour and 15 minutes east of Kansas City in Lafayette County.

Deputies, along with multiple other agencies, started an extensive search of the area, including with a drone, to find the child.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., searchers found him in a small pond within the city limits. Although life-saving measures were attempted, the child was pronounced dead.

“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with the child’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said in the release.

The identity of the child has not been released. No additional information was available on Thursday.

The sheriff’s office thanked the community members who volunteered to assist in the search, as well as the Waverly Police Department, the Waverly Fire Protection District, the Alma Fire Protection District, Carroll County EMS, Higginsville Police Department, the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
