Citizen rescues child from house fire in Cameron that killed one person
A Good Samaritan helped rescue a child from a house fire that killed one person in Cameron on Sunday, police said.
Officers and firefighters were dispatched to the 400 block of North Nettleton Street around 4 p.m. Sunday after reports of a house fire with people trapped inside.
According to a news release, one caller reported hearing an explosion inside the residence.
Cameron police officers were the first to arrive on the scene. They reported heavy smoke and flames on the front porch of the home.
Around this time, a person broke a window and successfully rescued a child from the home while flames began to spread, police said.
Firefighters arrived moments later and began a thorough search of the residence while they tried to put out the fire. The house eventually became fully engulfed.
Fire department crews from Osborn and Hamilton were called to help put out the blaze.
One person died in the fire, police said. Officials have not yet publicly identified the victim.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Cameron Police Department detectives and the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family affected by this tragic event and express our gratitude to the first responders and citizens who acted heroically in the face of danger,” the police department said in a statement.
Cameron is about 51 miles northeast of Kansas City.
