One person is hospitalized with serious injuries after a crash on a Kansas City highway, police said.

Officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded just after 6 p.m. Saturday to southbound Interstate 29 near Northwest Gateway Drive, according to a crash log.

A preliminary investigation showed that a Chevrolet SUV sped south on I-29 when it failed to turn at a curve in the highway, police said.

The SUV ran off the road to the right, drove through a grass median and struck a concrete bridge support before coming to rest, the crash log said.

The SUV then caught on fire and was consumed by flames, police said in the crash log.

The driver and sole occupant of the SUV sustained critical injuries, police said. The driver was transported by paramedics to a hospital.

As of Sunday morning, the person was still at a hospital in critical condition.

Police continue to investigate what caused the crash.
