Step back in time with Missouri home’s retro flair, from carpets to conversation pit
If you ever wanted to step foot in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s iconic octagon, you can recreate that feeling in this Missouri house on sale.
The five-bedroom, five-bathroom home is in Monett, Missouri, a town of under 10,000 residents that’s an hour west from Springfield, and its most notable feature is the octagon-shaped conversation pit under a large chandelier. The 1970s staple caught the attention of social media account Zillow Gone Wild, which looks at unique home listings on real estate website Zillow.
“We found the final boss of conversation pits in Monett Missouri,” Zillow Gone Wild said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Some would call this home a total monett??? Think about the conversations you can have here.”
The home, located at 423 N. Belaire St., has been listed for sale for more than a month on Zillow for $429,900 by RE/MAX of Kansas and Missouri.
It was the former home of Andres Apostol, a Missouri doctor who died in 2022. He and his wife moved to the town in the 1970s, and designed and built the home with “contemporary, forward-thinking” visions and “modern aesthetics,” the Zillow listing says.
The property is 1.29 acres and includes an outdoor personal tennis court. The house itself is 4,879 square feet, and other 70s features you can see inside are the sunken tubs in the master bedroom’s open-concept bathroom and the dunes in each of the five carpeted bedrooms on the second floor. Each room’s carpet color is different.
“Was the owner Austin Powers? House structure is great, the colorful shag carpet not so much,” said one user on Zillow Gone Wild’s Instagram page.
“How many Muppets had to die for that carpet?!” another user commented.
Walls of windows also surround the master bedroom, giving residents a nearly 360-degree view of the neighborhood from above.
The property also includes an outdoor court that can be utilized for personal tennis or pickleball matches. It also has a massive garage, a storm shelter, an old-school kitchen hood and three fireplaces. On the garage’s roof is a deck, which could be used for grilling or sunbathing.
Schools closest to the home are Monett Elementary School, Monett Middle School and Monett High School.
