100-year-old KC home designed by the Plaza’s architect hits market for $2.1M. See inside
If you’ve got $2.1 million at your disposal, you could live in a grand century-old home that just hit the market, designed by the architect of the Country Club Plaza.
The 5,000-square-foot house sits on almost an acre of land in Kansas City, nestled between Ward Parkway and State Line Road, near Mission Hills.
Designed by Plaza architect Edward Buehler Delk, the Tudor-style home was built in the 1920s.
The first inhabitants were the James family, prominent Kansas City residents. The family was headed by Thomas Martin James, president of the T.M. James and Sons China Company, and Gertrude Jones James, a sculptor and member of the Kansas City Art Institute board.
The Jones family had to restore the house after a 1936 incident. Gertrude and a “houseboy” were home when a fire started in the roof, The Kansas City Star reported.
“They and the neighbors carried articles of furniture and silverware to safety,” The Star said.
Although the flames were largely contained to the top floor, smoke and water damaged furnishings in almost every room.
After Gertrude died in 1955, the family sold the house. That year, an advertisement in the Kansas City Star described the property as “a beautiful home on beautiful grounds.” It touted the sewing room, maid’s room and two sleeping porches, which now have other uses.
Last week, the home hit the market again, listed on Zillow with five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a finished basement and a three-car garage in the Sunset Hill West neighborhood.
The kitchen features double ovens and a Sub-Zero refrigerator. Because of its age, some of the less visible features of the century-old home have been replaced, including the HVAC system, sewer line and windows.
The dining room has historic parquet floors and an original chandelier.
The main bedroom features a gas fireplace — one of three in the home — and an attached marble-covered bathroom.
In the basement, a wet bar and exterior door can be found in the below-ground family room, which spreads out over 800 square feet.
A firepit and multiple outdoor seating areas sit on the acre property, shaded with mature trees.
The property at 1234 W. 58th St. was listed Friday for $2.1 million by Gail Cluen of ReeceNichols.
