Meet Maverick, the Great Dane from Missouri named top dog for comforting military families

Meet Maverick, a gigantic 150-lb. European Blue Great Dane, who captured first place in the therapy dog category in a contest sponsored by American Humane earlier this month.

Maverick, along with his handler and owner Kelly Brownfield, spend their days at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. With Maverick’s big personality comes a gentler side. He provides comfort to military families who have experienced trauma, loss, stress and suicide ideation. Together, Brownfield and Maverick have completed 55 comfort missions this year.

Additionally, the duo have supported each other through their own struggles with cancer.
