Five student athletes on the University of Central Missouri football team in Warrensburg were hospitalized Saturday for possible heat-related illness, according to a university athletics spokesman.

Ryan Anderson, media relations manager of the school’s athletics program, said the students went to the hospital as a precaution.

But one of the players was still hospitalized four days later. That player is scheduled to leave the hospital Wednesday, Anderson said.

The other four athletes have been released from care, he said.

Staff try to keep everybody hydrated and monitor the athletes, Anderson said.

Temperatures Saturday in Warrensburg reached a recorded high of about 107 degrees.

The weather is expected to cool down as the week progresses, according to the National Weather Service.
