One killed after trailer becomes unhitched from truck on highway near Warrensburg

One person was killed Sunday when a trailer became unhitched from a truck and hit a vehicle near Warrensburg, Missouri.

The crash occurred on westbound U.S. 50 highway, east of Missouri Highway 13, the Missouri Highway Patrol said on social media shortly before 2 p.m.

A truck pulling a trailer was traveling east when the trailer became unhitched, the patrol said. It crossed the median and struck a Jeep that was traveling west head-on.

The Jeep’s driver, Walter Shannon, 63, died.

A passenger in the vehicle was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

Westbound U.S. 50 was shut down at N.E. 501st Road and traffic was being diverted, the patrol said.
