Kansas artist finishes huge ‘earth portrait’ of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Take a look
Kansas artist Stan Herd has put the finishing touches on a larger-than-life ‘earth portrait’ of Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz on a farm in Lawrence.
The artist unveiled a portrait of Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, just days after Joe Biden dropped out of the race in July. The piece, entitled “The Biden Legacy,” left a space blank next to Harris for a portrait of her imminent VP pick.
“I have been a huge supporter of Kamala Harris, including back in the day when she was running for president in 2020,” Herd told The Star in late July. “I just think she is the future — she is such a strong leader, and I really feel it’s the time for women to take power.”
His team took to Facebook to reveal the finished diptych.
“It is with great pleasure to reveal the running mate and vice presidential pick of current Vice President Kamala Harris, Mr. Tim Walz in Earthwork form,” the page wrote.
Herd creates his artworks using natural materials like sand, compost and different colors of soil. After they are completed, he allows many of the pieces to be reclaimed by nature. Already, grass and plants are visible growing on and around Harris’ portrait.
By the time Election Day arrives in November, the artworks will have largely faded back into the landscape.
