Missouri House to drop impeachment case against Gov. Jay Nixon

The GOP-led Missouri House is dropping its impeachment case against Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

In a statement Tuesday, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said that although the committee found the charges against Nixon to be “serious,” the level of “willful misconduct” is insufficient “to warrant forwarding the impeachment resolutions to the full House of Representatives” for consideration.

that an executive order Nixon signed violates a voter-approved constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. The order allowed gay and lesbian couples legally married in other states to file joint tax returns with Missouri.

Another article of impeachment alleged that Nixon should be removed from office for not moving quickly enough to call special elections for vacant legislative seats.

A third article alleged insufficient punishment of officials involved in a dispute over concealed-gun permits.
