How Kansas and Missouri senators voted on Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’
Kansas and Missouri senators on Tuesday voted to pass President Donald Trump’s mega-bill that slashes taxes and social safety net programs.
Every senator from both sides of the state line supported the bill, which the Republican president dubbed his “big, beautiful bill.” The legislation narrowly passed the U.S. Senate on a vote of 51 to 50, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tiebreaking vote.
The legislation, which saw a last-second name change, now heads to the U.S. House.
A key policy initiative for Trump, the spending bill has also faced fierce resistance for its impact on the national debt and cuts to social safety net programs, such as Medicaid, which could lead to thousands of Americans losing health insurance.
Kansas and Missouri senators, whose votes helped push the bill across the finish line, quickly weighed in on the bill on Tuesday. Sen. Roger Marshall, a Kansas Republican, said on social media that the legislation would “deliver MAJOR wins to every single American.”
Sen. Eric Schmitt, a Missouri Republican, posted that the bill “delivers on President Trump’s agenda—securing the border, funding mass deportations, cutting taxes for families, strengthening our military, and unleashing American energy.”
One notable vote came from Sen. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, who has faced sharp criticism for supporting the bill despite previous comments he made opposing cuts to Medicaid.
How They Voted:
Sen. Josh Hawley, Missouri Republican - Yes
Sen. Eric Schmitt, Missouri Republican - Yes
