Bus carrying softball team rolls over, severely injuring players, OK school says
An Oklahoma school district canceled classes Tuesday, Sept. 9, after its softball team was involved in a “serious” bus crash, officials say.
The school bus carrying the Minco High School softball team rolled over several times around 8 p.m. Sept. 8 after a game in Anadarko, according to KOTV, citing Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Multiple people were thrown from the bus, the station reported.
Eight people were injured, including six critically, according to The Oklahoman. Five juveniles were among the injured victims, Lt. Mark Southall told the publication.
The team’s coach, who was driving the bus, was also injured, KOCO reported. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
“This evening, our Minco Softball team was in a serious accident west of Minco,” Kevin Sims, the district’s superintendent, said in a statement Sept. 8. “Multiple individuals on the bus were severely injured. We will be closing school tomorrow. ... Please keep these student-athletes, coaches and their families in your prayers.”
Minco City Hall also shared its condolences, calling it a “scary evening” for the community.
“In Minco, we are more than a town, we are a family. When one of us hurts, we all hurt,” the Facebook post said.
Minco is about a 40-mile drive southwest from Oklahoma City.
