Resident shoots stranger breaking into his home, Oregon police say

A Portland resident shot a man breaking into his home after warning him to stop, Oregon police reported.

The resident heard someone banging on his front door and warned the accused intruder to stop or he would be shot at 1:26 a.m. Thursday, June 19, Portland police said in an email to McClatchy News.

The accused intruder kicked in the door and the resident shot him as he crossed the threshold, police said.

Officers arriving in response to an earlier call by the resident found the intruder had been shot in the arm, police said. They put a tourniquet on his arm and took him to a hospital.

Officers arrested Austin R. Mason-Jones, 35, of Portland, on a charge of burglary, police said. The resident cooperated with investigators and has not been charged.
