19-year-old found dead after telling 911 car went into lake, MS officials say
A driver was found dead after he called 911 to say his car went into a lake in Mississippi, the coroner’s office told news outlets.
Yazoo County 911 got a call around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, May 10, from a man who said he veered off the road and into a river near the Holly Bluff community, WLBT reported, citing county Coroner Ricky Shivers.
Authorities arrived at the scene and spotted the car in the floodwaters of Lake George several minutes later, according to WJTV. Only its tail lights were visible, Shivers told the station.
Crews continued to search the area, deploying two boats and a dive team into the water, WJTV reported, citing the coroner. They found the car, though no one was inside.
The search continued for the missing driver, and crews found the body of Kyeternity Moore, 19, of Rolling Fork, at approximately 8 a.m., according to WLBT.
McClatchy News reached out to the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office for more information May 12 and was awaiting a response.
Officials said the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is also investigating, WAPT reported.
According to the Arkansas Department of Corrections, Moore was recently hired as an officer at the department’s Cummins Unit.
“He was off to a great start, smart, levelheaded and seemed to enjoy his time here at Cummins,” the unit said in a tribute posted on its Facebook page, describing Moore as an “outstanding young officer.”
“Please continue to pray for his family, extended family and co-workers during this difficult time,” they wrote.
Additional information wasn’t immediately available.
Yazoo County is about a 40-mile drive northeast from downtown Jackson.
