A man died after collapsing in the surf at a Northern California beach trying to rescue a dog, firefighters reported.

The man fell after dashing fully clothed into the surf at Ocean Beach on Thursday, May 8, the San Francisco Fire Department said in a news release.

Onlookers called 911 while two women on the beach pulled the man to shore, firefighters said.

The dog was able to get to shore on its own, firefighters said.

Firefighters who arrived within minutes began CPR and took the man to a hospital, where he later died, the agency said.

“This is an unfortunate reminder not to enter the water for humans or pets but rather, to call 911,” firefighters said.
