An ice cream truck driver is in custody following a fatal collision involving a child, Michigan authorities say.

The boy was “outside being a child” when he was struck by the ice cream truck just after 7 p.m. on Monday, April 14, Detroit Police Department Capt. Shannon Hampton said in a news briefing streamed by WXYZ.

Hampton said the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not identified the child, who Hampton said is under 10 years old. The victim was a boy, according to WJBK and WWJ.

It’s unclear what led to the fatal collision. Hampton said the driver remained on scene and was taken into custody, but authorities did not announce if charges were expected to be filed.

Hampton called it “a very tragic scene.”

“This time of year with the weather breaking, it’s very important that everybody’s mindful that the children are out and they’re playing,” Hampton told reporters. “If you see school buses and ice cream trucks, just slow down a little bit, look around, check your surroundings before proceeding past them.”
