A woman was killed in a highway crash while trying to help the victim of a previous wreck, Texas police told news outlets.

The collision happened after 1 a.m. Saturday, March 29, along the Gulf Freeway in Houston, police told KPRC.

Investigators say a black car was stopped and facing the wrong way in the middle of the highway after being rear-ended by another vehicle that fled the scene, KHOU reported.

Two women in another vehicle came upon the wreck and pulled off to the shoulder to help the woman inside, police told the outlet. But as one of the women approached the car, a blue sedan crashed into it, pushing it into the woman and killing her, according to investigators.

The woman in the black car also died, but it’s unclear if the first or second crash is responsible, KPRC reported.

The driver of the blue sedan was injured, police told KTRK. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene, and are believed to have been in their 20s or 30s, police said.

An investigation is underway and police are searching for the driver who caused the initial crash, the station reported.
