A woman was “passed out” in the driveway of a Texas home when her boyfriend fatally ran over her toddler, Texas police said, adding that both the mother and boyfriend have been arrested.

The incident happened at a home in Tomball, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a March 15 post on X, formerly Twitter. Tomball is a roughly 30-mile drive northwest from Houston.

Investigators say the child was in a vehicle with her 31-year-old mom, who was “allegedly passed out/or sleeping,” but the toddler got out and was hit when her mom’s boyfriend pulled into the driveway in a separate vehicle.

The 18-month-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, Gonzalez said. The couple delayed calling 911, he added, though it’s unclear how much time passed between when the girl was struck and when help arrived.

The mother was arrested on a charge of child endangerment, according to Gonzalez, and her 41-year-old boyfriend was taken into custody on already-existing warrants for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and theft. Investigators say he was not impaired.
