Mom stabs 18-year-old son to death, then charges at officers with knife, GA cops say
An 18-year-old was stabbed to death by his mother during an argument outside of a Georgia apartment complex, investigators said.
Khalil Wigfall, a student at Hiram High School, was found lying in the street with stab wounds outside of apartment buildings in Hiram at about 1:15 p.m. Sunday, March 2, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a March 3 news release.
Hiram police officers then saw a woman holding a knife and wearing “bloody clothing,” according to the release. She was later identified as 38-year-old Daniele McDowell, Wigfall’s mother, according to the GBI.
McDowell then charged at the officers, disregarding their commands, investigators said.
An officer tried to use his taser on her, but she continued to charge at the officers, the Hiram Police Department said in a March 2 news release.
“Both officers on scene gave verbal commands, but the woman continued to charge the officer with a knife and eventually stabbed herself with the knife,” GBI officials said in the release.
The GBI said the officer fired his gun multiple times at her.
McDowell was then taken to a hospital where she died, investigators said. Wigfall died at the scene.
Authorities did not say what started the argument.
“It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news of the passing of one of our students,” Hiram High School Principal Darius Hodge said in a March 4 statement to the school. “I would like to offer my deepest condolences to Khalil Wigfall family and friends during this unimaginably painful time.”
Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine paid administrative leave as GBI continues to investigate, police said.
Hiram is about a 30-mile drive northwest from Atlanta.
