A dad was swimming with his child in an Oregon river when he drowned, deputies said.

Jeremiah Joshua Baldwin, 42, was “struggling” to stay above water on July 14 while helping his child float at Jurgens Park in Tualatin, according to a news release by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Bystanders helped the child to the shore, but they couldn’t find the man, deputies said.

Firefighters and medical personnel searched the area and eventually recovered Baldwin’s body, officials said.

The Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating and the man’s family was notified, deputies said.

Tualatin is about a 10-mile drive southwest of Portland.
